Time for Indoor!!
Training in the Great Northeast !
Well Folks, as you may have noticed these days, it’s pretty dark by 4:30 or 5:00 pm in the great Northeast. When you combine that with the temperatures beginning to plummet down to 30 oF (That’s -18oC for our friends abroad), outdoor goalkeeper training not only becomes difficult, it becomes downright nasty!
So for most of us here in the Northeast, it’s time to head indoors to continue our weekly training sessions. It is very important to continue to work on your goalkeeping skills throughout the winter. You must keep your mental skills sharp, your knowledge fresh and always improve on your technique!
Indoor Training:
Fortunately, in many locations in the Northeast, usually within an hour or so of every goalkeeper’s home, is some type of indoor facility. Many facilities have indoor soccer leagues that flourish this time of year. You can usually find some time to train either with a team or with a coach.
At J4K-Capital District, NY for example, for a few extra bucks, we rent an indoor dome field for an hour every Friday from 5pm to 6pm (Afrim’s Bethlehem Dome). We reinforce basic skills, work on honing our technique and have plenty of goalkeeper competition games! We routinely work on basic handling, all diving techniques, footwork, footwork, footwork and yes even distribution and positioning.
It can be tons of fun and more importantly, keepers are continuing to work on their skills while the others are hibernating. Come spring time…who’s going to be ready to dominate!?!?!?!?
Check out this video from last winter on footwork, handling and recovery.
So I encourage you to check out your local Just4Keepers . See what type of indoor training they are offering. I also encourage you to check out local indoor leagues and join a team. Indoor goalkeeping is fast paced, against many shots and it’s all about angles!!!
Did I also mention that it’s really fun?!?!?!?!?!
